Artist Statement:
I build my terracotta vessels by hand. Rather than being thrown on a wheel, my vessels are constructed with coils of clay - a slow, deliberate process. I burnish them with a small stone to bring forth a lustrous surface. The pots are then bisque-fired in an electric kiln, cooled and loaded into a sagger - an enclosed, airtight containter - for a second firing. It is this time-intensive process that gives my vessels their coloration.
Sometimes you do things and you just know that it feels right. That's how it is for me. I love the creative process of working with clay. It's magical: you start with something that's nothing and then it moves nicely and holds its shape. It responds to you.
I want to create art that has a calming influence and for it to be meditative and minimal. That's the atmosphere I live in.
